Sports and Youth Services Department of Government of Orissa today felicitated 16 sportspersons with cash awards for winning medals or participating in the 19th Commonwealth Games at New Delhi and the 16th Asian Games at Guangzhou, China last year.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik handed over a total cash incentive of Rs 47,99,984 along with mementos and citations in a function here at Jayadev Bhawan in the presence of Sports Minister P C Bhanjadeo, Sports Secretary Parag Gupta and Sports Director S P Mishra.
Weightlifter K Ravikumar received the highest total amount of Rs 10,82,352 for bagging gold in Commonwealth Games and participating in the Asian Games. Hockey mid-fielder Prabodh Tirkey, who helped India win silver in Commonwealth Games and bronze in the Asiad, became richer by Rs 8 lakhs.
Woman hurdler-cum-sprinter Jauna Murmu pocketed Rs 7,82,352 for being a part of the six-member squad that bagged the 4x400m relay gold in the Commonwealth Games. After running in the preliminary round and semifinals, the tribal girl from Mayurbhanj, however, was made to sit out in the final. In the Asian Games, Jauna missed bronze in the 400m hurdles by a whisker and finished fourth.
Woman rowers Pratima Puhan and Pramila Prava Minz were given Rs 3 lakhs each for claiming bronze in the Asian Games. Woman sprinter Srabani Nanda was another leading beneficiary, taking home Rs 3,82,352 for helping India win bronze in 4x100m relay event of the Commonwealth Games and for her participation the Asian Games.
Besides the six medal winners, 10 other sportspersons of the state received Rs 82,352 each for their participation in Commonwealth and Asian Games.
They included woman hockey players Subhadra Pradhan, Binita Toppo and Mukta Prava Barla; gymnast Rakesh Kumar Patra; woman karateka Valena Valentina;, rugby players Bikash Kumar Jena and Bhagyalaxmi Barik; Seema Dung Dung (kayaking-canoeing); Amusana Devi (rowing) and women hurdler Anuradha Biswal.
Subhadra, Binita, Mukta, Rakesh, Valena and Bikash, however, could not join the function due to unavoidable reasons.
